1. Light Up Key Areas- Entry areas, such as porches, decks and all doors should be brightly lit. Do not approach your home in darkness, if possible.
2. Lock It Up- All doors and windows, including those on sheds and garages, should be locked at all times, even when you are at home. Deadbolts are effective on windowless doors; just make sure they can be unlocked without a key.
3. Don't Invite Trouble- Simple things, such as keeping your hedges trimmed, hiding ladders and closing shades will make your home less inviting to potential burglars. After all, you don't want to make it any easier for them to break in.
4. Give It the Lived-In Look- Your home should always look occupied, even when your'e away on vacation. If you are gone for an extended period of time, have the post office hold your mail, and have paper delivery held until you get back. Do yard work before you leave, lock all doors and windows and notify neighbors of your absence.
5. Know Your Enemy- Be aware of the habits of most burglars. The majority of break-ins occur during working hours, when people are likely to be away. Also, burglars know where you might hide the spare key, so don't put one under the door mat. Also, don't indicate on your voice mail or answering machine that you aren't at home.
